What are INTACS?

Mild myopia, also known as nearsightedness, can be addressed through INTACS (Intracorneal Rings or Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments). INTACS consist of small rings made of biocompatible material and are inserted into the cornea of patients with Keratoconus to enhance visual acuity and topographic images. The primary goal of INTACS is to reshape the cornea without affecting the visual axis. While they can be removed if necessary, they are typically placed permanently. INTACS come in various thicknesses to determine the degree of flattening required, which is crucial for vision correction. This treatment is approved for correcting myopia ranging from -1.0 to -3.0 diopters and astigmatism not exceeding 1 diopter. The minimally invasive surgery involving INTACS corneal implants is mainly employed for the treatment of Keratoconus.

Candidates for INTACS

  • Individuals with refractive errors within normal ranges and corneas that are not excessively thin are eligible candidates.
  • Individuals with eyes in good health are suitable candidates.
  • Individuals aged 21 years or older are eligible candidates.
  • Individuals who are unhappy with the use of contact lenses or glasses are eligible candidates.
  • Individuals who recognize that the use of contact lenses or glasses may be necessary for certain activities post-surgery are eligible candidates.
  • There is no maximum age restriction for Intacs.
  • Eligible candidates are those who have maintained a stable prescription for contact lenses or glasses for a minimum of one year.

Intacs Procedure

The initial step involves numbing the eyes with anesthetic drops. To prevent eye blinking, the surgeon uses a speculum. The procedure begins with a small incision in the cornea. A centering guide is utilized to insert the Intacs and create two microscopic tunnels at the corneal periphery. Following this, the surgeon closes the opening and may administer antibiotic drops. Certain patients experience an immediate improvement in their vision. The entire surgery typically lasts around one hour.

Benefits of Intacs

  • Intacs do not change the curvature of the cornea.
  • It has been seen that 97% of people with Intacs have a driver’s license and they do not require contact lenses or eyeglasses.
  • Improvement in vision can be noticed on the same day.
  • No tissue is removed in Intacs.
  • Around 50% of people who have Intacs have 20/20 vision or even better.
  • Flexibility for prescription changes.
  • The patient cannot feel the implants once they are inserted.
  • It does not involve any maintenance unlike in contact lenses.

Laser and Intacs

Distinctions exist between laser surgery and Intacs implants. Laser surgery involves permanent reshaping of the cornea by removing tissue from its central optical zone. In contrast, Intacs implants require corneal incisions but do not involve tissue removal. The tissue removed during laser surgery cannot regenerate or be replaced, and the natural aging process impacts vision over time. Laser surgery removes more tissue for vision correction, whereas in Intacs, new implants are positioned where tissue has not been removed.

Intacs for Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease that leads to the thinning of the cornea, the transparent front surface of the eye. Intacs corneal implants are employed to address the astigmatism associated with Keratoconus and also to correct nearsightedness. Individuals with this eye condition often experience a decline in vision, and traditional methods like contact glasses or lenses are ineffective. While corneal transplants were once the primary option, the use of Intacs has become more prevalent. Specifically designed for those intolerant to contact lenses, Intacs corneal implants offer an effective solution for improving vision and stabilizing the cornea.

Cost of Intacs Treatment

Intacs treatment in India is highly cost-effective. The procedures are conducted by skilled doctors and specialists, ensuring the presence of top-notch medical facilities and services.
