What are Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are painless, soft, non-cancerous growths that line the sinuses or nasal passages. They result from intense inflammation due to recurrent infections, immune disorders, asthma, or drug sensitivity.

The growth of mucus membranes leads to various symptoms, including headaches, chronic sinus infections, and sinus congestion. Issues associated with nasal polyps include :

  • It creates a conducive environment for the growth of bacteria.
  • If left untreated, the condition can result in the development of septicemia in one or more sinus cavities. This encourages the growth of bacteria with mucus in the sinus cavity.
  • It hinders the free movement of air through the nasal passages.

The bacteria in the mucus result from two processes :

  • The body produces excess mucus due to nasal polyps.
  • Swelling and inflammation conditions narrow the exit ways, impeding the drainage of normal mucus. This fosters the growth of bacteria with nasal mucus in the cavities, resulting in more chronic infections.

What causes Nasal Polyps?

  • Edema occurs when there is an extensive production of fluid in the nasal membranes and sinuses, leading to engorgement and swelling of nasal polyps. The enlargement of these fluid-filled pouches can then descend into the nasal cavity through the sinus opening.
  • Irritants such as alcohol and tobacco can expose the membranes to numerous infections, ultimately resulting in the swelling of the membrane lining.
  • The primary cause of nasal polyps is persistent inflammation within the sinuses and nose. This inflammation can be attributed to factors such as atmospheric pollution, sinus infections, or allergies.

Treatment for Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps can be addressed through various treatments, including surgery, steroid treatments, and nasal sprays. Endoscopic surgery, effective for about twelve months before potential re-growth, is one option, with a recovery period of 1-3 weeks. In certain cases, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) may also be necessary.

Nasal Polyps Removal

The surgical procedure aims to remove the swollen skin lining within the nasal sinuses, which can be caused by infection or allergies. This condition hinders normal breathing through the nose.

Nasal Polyps Symptoms

  • Xerostomia (dry mouth) and mouth breathing
  • Congestion or nasal obstruction
  • Throbbing of the face, pain and pressure
  • Rhinitis (running nose)
  • Reduced sense of taste
  • Condition of loss of smell that has been caused by the blockage of nasal polyps
  • Dull headaches
  • Persistent nasal stuffiness that makes breathing through the nasal passages difficult
  • Snoring
  • Discolored and thick nasal drainage
  • Excessive nasal drainage
  • Severe recurrent sinus infections

Nasal Polypectomy

The objective of this procedure is to remove nasal polyps without any external incisions, conducted entirely through the nose. Two techniques are employed based on the polyps' location. Intranasal polypectomy involves using small graspers when the polyp is visible from the front of the nose. Endoscopic nasal polypectomy utilizes small telescopes to provide a clear view when dealing with small-sized polyps located in the sinuses or on the roof of the nose.
